Are you moving to the Augusta area some time soon? How exciting! Our “Garden City” contains the Augusta National Golf Course, is the hometown of the soul singer James Brown, and is a U.S. Military Hub containing Fort Gordon, the Army Cyber Center of Excellence, and more. As you can see, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of moving to a new place. However, you need to dial in and focus on what is going to be in your immediate future. Premier Appliance strives to provide the top residential appliance repair services to those in the Augusta Ga area, and we want to help you! When you move into your new home, here are some things that you want to double check with your appliances before you get too settled in.

Why Inspect Appliances Before Moving In?

Before we tell you what to look out for, you first should understand why checking your appliances before moving into a new home is important. Think of it this way: would you buy a car without test driving it? Would you spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on an outfit for an important event without trying the clothes on first? You need to approach your new home with the same idea!

Your home may have been inspected beforehand, but the more eyes on something, the better. Appliance issues can easily get overlooked, especially when inspected by someone with little appliance repair experience. In Augusta specifically, we deal with a lot of heat and humidity throughout the majority of the year along with the occasional snow storm in the winter. Setting your appliances up to combat these conditions ASAP will help you save time, money, and stress after move in and during the first few months in your new place!

Not sure which appliances to check first? Let’s start in the kitchen.

Start With the Kitchen Appliances

With all of the moving expenses, you do not want to lose any food during the moving process due to a malfunctioning refrigerator! You also don’t want to waste money on takeout to avoid cooking on a broken stove or washing dishes in a dishwasher that barely works. Here’s what to keep an eye out for in your kitchen.

Refrigerator

Like we said, you really don’t want to lose food because you didn’t check your refrigerator. Without the proper tools, refrigerators can also just be hard and stress inducing to move on your own since they are so large and bulky.

When checking your refrigerator, listen for a few minutes for any unusual noises. Then, check that all of the lights on or inside the fridge are working like they should be. Next, you will want to pay attention to the rubber seal that runs around the door on your refrigerator and freezer. If it is loose or ripped at all, air could be leaking out (or in!) causing unstable temperatures and premature food spoilage.

Lastly, you will want to take a look at the coils on the back of your refrigerator. Older refrigerators that have been overworked and improperly maintenanced will have hot coils – a sign that you will likely be buying a new fridge and plenty of fresh groceries soon!

Dishwasher

No one wants to re-wash their dishes after they’ve been through a cycle in the dishwasher. In your new home, throw a few dirty dishes in and run a full cleaning cycle. When it’s done, are your dishes actually clean? Is your dishwasher giving off a weird odor? Don’t forget to also check the filter for any debris. Even if your dishwasher is functioning properly, cleaning the filter is quick and easy preventative maintenance that goes a long way!

Oven & Stove

A faulty stove or oven isn’t only an inconvenience, but can be a danger to your home. Whether gas or electric, you need to make sure that there are no burnt wires anywhere and that everything is connected properly.

Make sure that your stove top heats evenly to prevent dinner taking twice as long to cook. To test your oven you can purchase an oven thermometer, heat your oven with the thermometer inside, and then check that the thermometer matches the temperature that you set your oven to once fully heated.

Don’t Forget to Check the Laundry Room!

You haven’t checked all of your major appliances just yet! Your washing machine and dryer are also vital to your home’s daily operations. They should be inspected and taken care of, too.

Washer

When you move in to your new home, run some of your dirtiest laundry through your washing machine. You may even want to consider running pieces through that have holes or small tears as well. This way, you can see 1) how clean your laundry comes out, and 2) if the washing machine is too rough on your clothing (if the holes are more worn or stretched than before the wash).

Don’t forget to also listen for any weird sounds and keep an eye out for any leaks.

Dryer

A malfunctioning or improperly maintained dryer is also a danger for your household. Be sure to always empty the lint tray and even check the outside lint trap periodically as well. Any blockages or build up of lint could lead to a house fire.

Again, you can also run the dryer to make sure that there are no unusual noises occurring. Also, keep an eye out for any wires that look out of place or burnt.
